A percentage of a number is total × percent ÷ 100. A as a percentage of B is A ÷ B × 100. Change uses (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. Percentage difference compares two nonnegative values against their average, without a direction.

Worked examples and common mistakes
Choose the baseline first. Visits rising from 800 to 1,000 represent (1,000 − 800) ÷ 800 × 100 = 25% growth. Falling from 1,000 to 800 is a 20% decrease. The same difference of 200 produces different rates because the baseline changes.
A rate rising from 10% to 15% increases by 5 percentage points, or 50% relative to the original rate. Subtracting two percentages is different from calculating percent change. Use percentage difference when neither value is a starting baseline.

What is 15% of 200?
Enter a total of 200 and a percentage of 15. The answer is 30.
Is percent difference the same as percent change?
No. Going from 100 to 120 is a 20% increase. Their symmetric percentage difference is about 18.18%.
Why does a zero baseline show an error?
Division by zero is undefined. Choose a nonzero denominator or starting value. Zero percent of a number is still valid.
